Dr. Merrill formerly headed the Northeast Asia Division of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the US Department of State. He has held teaching and research positions at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Georgetown University, George Washington University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Lafayette College.
Inside the White House: The Future of US-DPRK Policy (2016); The Origin and Truth of the Korean War (2004), in Korean translated by Jong Chan Lee; Korea: The Peninsular Origins of the War, 1945-1950 (1989); The Cheju-do Rebellion (1988) in Japanese.
